Our 26 5 to 12 year old kindergarten and first grade kids study in the same classroom. Some are younger siblings of older students and graduates who've been with us for a while. The rest are kids who fit our criteria of very poor and two or more years behind their expected grade level through no fault of their own. The great majority, as is the case with most of our kids, are fatherless. Their mothers struggle to earn enough selling goods on the street, baby sitting, being maids and other menial jobs to put food on the table. With one notable exception, none of our absent fathers provide support of any kind.
